From Cameroon to the World: A Journey of Excellence

Born and raised in Cameroon, Dr Tambe Elvis Akem represents the new generation of African professionals whose expertise transcends borders. His academic path is a testament to dedication and excellence. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Buea (2008–2015), followed by advanced studies in public health and epidemiology with an MSc in Integrated Management of Health Risks (One Health) from the University of Liège, Belgium, and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the Free University of Brussels, complemented by Field Epidemiology certification from Epicentre/MSF. This rich educational foundation equipped him to tackle complex health challenges across diverse settings.

Transforming Public Health Across Continents

Dr Akem has applied his skills on multiple continents. In Cameroon, he worked as a physician at District Hospital Kumba and the Ministry of Public Health, managing a wide range of medical services and community health initiatives. As Medical Coordinator with Helen Keller International, he led filariasis control programs. His international contributions include One Health research in the Philippines and COVID-19 screening for vulnerable populations in Brussels with Médecins du Monde. Since 2021, he has served as Mission Epidemiologist with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), coordinating outbreak responses, vaccination campaigns, disease surveillance, and community-based health monitoring in humanitarian and fragile contexts.

AI as a Tool for Public Health Impact

Beyond traditional medicine, Dr Akem is pioneering the integration of artificial intelligence into public health. Leveraging AI for surveillance, outbreak prediction, and program optimization, he exemplifies the practical application of Chapter XVII of Power 237: Artificial Intelligence and Power. By combining technology with human expertise, he accelerates responses, enhances decision-making, and maximizes health outcomes—a clear demonstration of how innovation can become a lever of national and regional power.
