The Cameroonian subsidiary of South African telecommunications giant MTN, MTN Cameroon, has a new face at the helm. Ebenezer Essoka has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, replacing Colin Mukete, who has held the post since the subsidiary was founded in 2002. The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Group’s Board of Directors in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ebenezer Essoka, a seasoned financial expert in the African banking sector, brings with him more than 30 years of corporate experience and expertise. Having held various board positions, including at Standard Chartered Bank, Mr Essoka is well known for his leadership and in-depth understanding of the financial sector.
This appointment comes at a time when MTN Cameroon is facing significant legal challenges. The company is currently engaged in a legal battle to lift the seizure of its accounts, which have been frozen since September 2022 as a result of a dispute with Cameroonian billionaire Baba Danpullo.
Although the legal situation remains complex, MTN Cameroon is maintaining a positive growth trajectory. The results for the first half of 2023 show a 9.2% increase in sales to FCFA 156 billion. With a market share of 51.6%, the operator has a dominant position in the telecommunications sector in Cameroon.
Ebenezer Essoka takes the reins of MTN Cameroon in a dynamic environment. His mission will be to support the continued growth of the company while navigating through the ongoing legal challenges. Jonas Mcebisi, Chairman of the MTN Group Board of Directors, expressed his confidence in Mr Essoka to continue the development of MTN in Cameroon and promote digital progress in the country. The appointment of Ebenezer Essoka has generated enthusiasm for the next stage in the evolution of MTN Cameroon.
