Visionary Cameroonian engineer and computer scientist, Arthur Zang has revolutionized access to cardiac care in remote regions of Africa through his invention, the Cardiopad.
Arthur Zang designed the Cardiopad in response to the urgent situation of cardiovascular diseases in developing countries, where the lack of cardiologists and appropriate medical equipment is a pressing reality. The
Cardiopad allows for cardiac examinations by measuring physiological data such as pulse rate and RR interval duration between two beats. This data is then transmitted remotely to a cardiologist for an accurate diagnosis.
The Design and Functioning of the Cardiopad
Arthur Zang developed the Cardiopad in just five years, without any personal resources, after having the idea to create such a tool during an internship in a cardiology department in 2009.
The Cardiopad works by placing electrodes on the patient, which are connected to a small module for acquiring the cardiac signal. This module captures the cardiac signals and sends them to the tablet, which analyzes and records them as referenced files in a national server. The cardiologist then interprets the results and provides a diagnosis, which is sent back to the national server. The results and any prescriptions are then downloaded onto the nurse’s Cardiopad, who communicates them to the patient.
Recognition and Impact of Arthur Zang
Thanks to his extraordinary innovation, Arthur Zang has received numerous awards and recognitions. He was a recipient of the prestigious Rolex Awards, which honor innovators who bring concrete solutions to global challenges.
Forbes also listed him among the ten personalities who will shape the future of Africa, highlighting his positive impact on the continent.
In 2013, he received the Innovation Prize in Africa for his outstanding contribution in the field of healthcare.
The positive impact of the Cardiopad is felt through facilitating the monitoring of cardiac patients and providing accurate diagnoses.
Arthur Zang is a true pioneer, whose achievements and commitment to improving healthcare in Africa deserve limitless recognition and admiration in the eyes of #Puissance237.
